fuel tank

I need to fab a new tank for my fairlane and was looking for any info from you guys. I was going to transfer the old sending unit over. will 18ga steel be enough? I was thinking of making to sides with rounded corners and just rolling the top/front/bottomrear over the sides and welding it shut. having the bottom veed to funnel fuel to the front/middle where the pickup is. the tank will be about 60litre and pretty flat , about 20cm tall. now the old one was hung on straps and was thinking of putting a length of angle on the front and rear with a hole to bolt it up without a strap. since the bottom will not be flat I was going to put a flase floor setup in it to reduce slooshing (mainly a highway car) and finish it all off with a poly sealer. so does this sound like a solid plan or would a GRP tank work too?
