Has anyone seen this?

Have you looked at the cost!!
for basically two plates behind the brake pads
Plus the calliper cost
I looked at this and decided on these

I have seen this and had a couple of thoughts;
1) Efficiency. Will it really hold on 18% (about 1:5) incline as required by Law??? If it will what effort on the handbrake lever??? Below the 400N
legal requirement??? I doubt it.
2) Wear. There is no automatic compensation for pad wear. That means adjusting the handbrake cable every weekend to keep the cable travel down and the
handbrake working.
3) Corrosion. The holes for the cables to pass through the pads will quickly close up (due to rust products) and trap the cable - buggering up
handbrake efficiency and affecting the hydraulic brake system effectiveness.
I wouldn't bother.
Single sided calipers with the integrated handbrake mechanism are more robust, not a lot heavier (3-4kgs Vs 1-2kgs each) and engineered to
VAG/Ford/GM/Honda/Toyota standards. They will repeatedly hold a much heavier vehicle on a 30% incline with less than 400N lever effort.
NO COMPETITION FOR ME 
These are the exact type I meant - designed for VW.

The Rally Design (VW) caliper won't fit under 13" wheels though _ i was going to buy a pair until I asked them.

Has anybody else seen the Handbrake setup on the new Renault Kangoo vans?
Was looking the other day as I fished the spare wheel out and they look to have a cable operated cylinder for the handbrake.
Should imagine its a similar thing to the Hydraulic handbrakes only its linked by a cable and not directly to the cylinder.
It was behind but inline from the handbrake and then it either had duplicate lines to the drum brake cylinders, or locked the same line, not sure.
Could be of use to some1 maybe?

It probably would BUT you would then have weakened the Aluminium caliper body. The ribs are added to increase the stiffness of the housing. This means
the fatigue life is extended and the chance of the housing cracking is minimised.
I wouldn't do it and wouldn't recommend anyone else did.

agreed if you have to take lots off, does anyone know how close they are to clearing ????? it may only be a fraction

I looks like it's not the caliper but the handbrake mechanism that the problem - could that be adapted to fit under 13" wheels?
The same is true of the sierra calipers, they don't quite fit under a 13" wheel, but I adapted the handbrake lever on the caliper a bit
and now they fit fine.

Rally Design promise a fitting kit (brackets etc) but say it won't go under 13" wheels - I wouldn't chance any filing - Peugeot /
Citroen calipers do - see here

what would be wrong with having a handbrake that worked like sticking a bar through a bikes spokes? You could bolt a small inboard disc in by the
diff, and just have a lever to completely sieze it up. It would have no problem holding the car as its not relying on friction like normal brakes.
Beware! Bourettes is binfectious.

it would be a bit like a mate's old MK2 escort rally car. The "handbrake" was a strategically drilled hole in the transmission
tunnel, and an old screwdriver on a piece of string!!
I kid you not, the screwdriver, when dropped through the hole, went through the yoke of the prop, therefore stopping the car rolling away!!
Very iffy but it got by the MOT man and RAC scrutes for 3 years!!

What about a similar contraption using a push/pull cable attached, in line, to a stout pin that enters a hole in the disc.

I have the Rally Design vw calipers for my car
I'm running 13 x 7 cxr rims
They will fit !!!!!!!
or they will by the time Martin has finished with them
I will post the mods needed once we are at that stage
