Wife Fiat Punto - high pitched whine ?

Anyone throw any light on this one.

The wifes T reg Fiat Punto S has started making a high pitched whining noise between 2500 and 3000 rpm. Seems to do it more "off load" (ie driving down hill). However it seems to disappear when the car is warm and sometimes doesn't do it at all. It's not a particularly loud noise, almost seems like its coming from inside the car. I've checked the usual places - radiator fan, fan belt etc with no luck.

Anyone else come across this one ?

Thanks Ray,

I think I can safely say (looks over shoulder) that this whine is nothing to do with the wife !

I had a heater blower fan that whined when cold but not on hot (until it destroyed itself). But being on/off load shouldn't make any difference there.

Don't s'pose you could record an mp3/wav and post it? Sounds worryingly as if it could be gearbox/diff related Does it do it when stationary?

p.s. I was also tempted by the wife gag, but alas too late

Probably worth changing the timing belt as well ? have known tensioners to sieze on these and cause belt failure

My mates punto was doing the same, Then the cam belt snapped (whilst I was in the car) I believe it was the tensioner, the AA guy said it wasnt uncommon with fiats.
