road tax

wasn't quite sure where this should go so thought its a legal issue and sva related so should go here.




Now i recently read that the laws have changed and cars registered after 2001 will be taxed differently compared to cars registered before to 2001.

The difference is cars registered before are taxed on a capacity rating. so my 5.0 V12 with no cats in its original 1992 BMW 750 home would have to pay a mere 175 quid (extortionate)


But with cars registered after 2001 the tax is dependent on the emissions and the fuel of the car, diesels are more expensive to tax than petrol which is more expensive than alternative fuels.

now beside the point that i want to start striging up money wasting politicians I would also like to know where I stand with registereing my car in 2007.

On this point does anyone know what the CO figure for a 1.6 pinto out of an E reg sierra would be.

Then assuming it's registered as a 1.6 if the engine is swapped for a 2.0 later on I presume you have to advise DVLA, the paperwork changes and so does the tax??

My guess it would go according to the age/size of the engine. If you are pre: 2001, then the old cc rules apply otherweise newer engine would be the g/co2 surely?

CO2 Emissions is based on efficiency so will change with what car it goes in due to drag etc. Therefore I presume it will still have to be based on engine size.

im paying keen attention to reducing the drag of my car and with a lot less weight and no auto box like a 7 series will be a lot more efficient (until i tinker with it )

im just curious as to weather ill have pay the extreme sums of money for my tax. If so i may have to start the revolution early

I am not happy either...

new tax rules came into effect yesterday, for cars registered yesterday onwards.

So I have a 1980 Rover V8 in a kit car shortly to be registered. I just hope I dont cop the £215 tax.

Hopefully a Q plate willl prevent this. but would still get a £175 Tax.

Fireblade seems a good way to go... Less than 1 litre and still goes like a rocket.

AFAIK

VED bands only apply to NEW mass produced cars.
CO2g/km figures are produced by the manufacture and are not solely dependant on engine capacity.
eg
Suzuki Alto 1.1 manual is Band B
Suzuki Alto 1.1 automatic is Band C
