Do I need longer studs?
Ive got meself some new wheels and have had to put 5mm spacers on the back to clear the springs/shocks. After bolting them up the studs are now
underflush of the nuts by about 3mm. Is this OK? or as the title says, do I need longer studs.
If it is OK, out of curiosity, whats the maximum amount of intrusion?
Cheers

At my SVA I had to take the wheel centres off to show that the wheel nuts were on enough... I assume that your car is already SVAd, but for peace of
mind I would like the studs to be "underflush" at all. I think the guide for SVA is 2-3 threads showing

Generally it is good to have a bit stuck out but some cars come with closed in nuts so as long as you have a good portion of thread contact then it
will be fine.

If for example your stud thread is 12mm dia then the general rule is that you you must have a minimum of 12mm length for fixing.
12mm or more ok, anything less definately not.
If you need to change the studs it's an easy job. You just hammer the old ones out (taking care to pack the hub flange so as not to shock damage
the bearing) then pull the new studs through with an old wheel nut and a tube which should be faced squarely which not only keeps the stud true to the
flange but also means you dont need to screw the nut so far when pulling the new studs through.
It is preferable the tube bore be as near to the stud o/d as possible.
I used a spare crush tube from my wishbone bushes.
Hope this helps.

Think the actual SVA requirement is for their to be 5-6 complete 360 degree turns of the wheel nut.....But as others say not too big a job
anyway.....Oli.
If your not living life on the edge you're taking up too much room!

If you use the hubs and wheel nuts off a donor, then surely they must be correct unless you have used the wrong wheels?
And some dome nuts don't even show any threads

Ni Nick,
The rears will be fine.
If you are still using the wheel nuts that I used then you have 25mm of thread in the nut. So with 3mm 'underflush' you have 22mm in
contact which is more than is required by the MSA regs which IIRC state 1.5 times the diameter of the stud, 12mm, so you could get away with 18mm.

Cheers Steve
Thats what I thought, but just looks a little wrong with no threads coming through the nut.

I have the same problem with my escort mk2 Locost. I can see how to get the studs out of the front disks but how do you get them out of the rear drums
without pulling the axel????Russ
