Hi,
I'm afraid that this is far from straightforward (IMHO) unless you have plenty of time and ideally some previous building experience. I'd seriously consider buying the MK Engineering chassis which has been carefully designed to take Sierra donor parts. Don't think that buying a chassis is a cop out because recent estimates on this forum put the chassis build at between 20% and 30% of the total project effort.

There are drawings which will help you to convert a book chassis to use IRS suspension and there are adapters to convert the front Sierra uprights to suit book wishbones but there are loads of issues which will take you lots of research to discover before you begin.

I don't mean to put you off (far from it) but if you want to build a "book" based locost then stick to live axle with Escort/Cortina bits. If you want to go with IRS and other Sierra bits then consider the MK Indy chassis or be prepared to spend lots of time researching and scratching your head. Personally I think that we (forum members) should compile a portfolio listing all the issues and gotcha's surrounding a Sierra based Locost build along with solutions, drawings and hints and tips to get you through. This is what I was looking for a few months ago for the same reason. I ended up going the de-dion route because I happened on a de-dion kit purely by chance. I believe that all the necessary information exists to build a book chassis with Sierra parts but it is not all in one place...

Anyway, as I said, I don't mean to put you off since it is damn good fun building your own car but I'd hate to see you get bogged down with loads of issues when you should be enjoying the build process.

Hopefully some of the other guys on the list will back me up in both encouraging you and guiding you in the right direction.

Good luck whatever you decide,
Craig.

ps. Take a look at the Tiger Avon book if you want to see a decent example of an IRS system based on Sierra parts.

Im building a 7 based on a Sierra. The changes of the book chassie took about 6 months of evenings and weekends...
Im working as a mechanical designer and the calculations are not too funny..
Still have to redesign the fueltank.
I have some files and pictures on my yahoo-site.

Thanks Simon, I knew I could count on you ;-)

I've been talking to oldbillkane via U2U and he has access to a 4 wheel alignment system at the local college where he lectures in Motor Eng. This would certainly make the task easier and if he uses "adjustable everything " joints along with educated guesswork followed by a session on the alignment rig then it might just work. I think he's decided to pursue IRS and I think he knows where our advice is coming from so at least he is going in with open eyes. I have wished him the best of luck and who knows, maybe a decent set of Locost IRS plans will come out of his venture... ;-)

Cheers,
Craig.
