got an interview with the station officer tonight as i was told that they are short on daytime cover, i was wondering how many hours they are looking for from you. do you have to book time off if you are out of the area etc

noy 100% sure, things have changed a bit in the last year or two. i think you have to meet a percentage of calls, or tell them how many hours you would be available. i don't think you have to say if you're away, as even if you are in the area, you might not be able to go every time. up here, you are also expected to attend training one evening a week, and other days training - ba etc - throughout the year. the stn officer wiil tell you all you need to know. most retained stations round here are more like social clubs! it's good crack, the money's pretty good, but it's quite a commitment. in saying that, give it a go, and if it doesn't suit, pack it in! good luck!

Guilty as charged !

But I am full time, and yes there is a certain snob factor from full time to retained.
However in my experience if your hard working and know your stuff you will get on fine with us wholetimers.
There are good points and bad points to life in a blue suit but it is all very rewarding and would reccomend anybody gives it a go.

I'm whole time but as an instructor I spent my life training and working with the retained service.
Great buch and very commited, good for a laugh and never cease to suprise me.

Just explain when you are availiable and how far you live from the station etc.
