I'm suprised you can hear anything over the cacofony of a 21/4 Landee engine even when it running sweet.
Sorry!!
If its under load only, could be Big end if there is a rumble,
If it a heavy clicking it could be nearer the top end tappets etc:

Pinking????????????????
Exhaust manifold cracked/leaking
Dizzy weights
little ends
If it looks wrong it probably is wrong.

Gudgeon pin or piston slap as suggested probably.

I went into the RSPCA office the other day. It was so small you could hardly swing a cat in there.

Is it worse when cold? If so then piston slap is a possibilty. Alternatively it might be small end(s) Don't think rings would make that sort of
noise - does it burn oil?
Cheers,
Raz

Pinking would be a rattle rather than a ticking noise . Could possible be the exhaust flange gasket opening up when engine is under load?

Exhaust gasket would be my first bet, it sounds just like a mechanical problem when they start leaking.

would second that, i had the exhaust gasket go on my car and it does sound like a mechanical ticking that gets louder when under load.
