TDi Remaps - Do they work?

Buying a Skoda Fabia vRS TDi 130 and been looking at the remaps available for VAG diesels.

I'm buying the car mainly for the economy but wanted something a bit sporty too.

All these remaps claim to boost mpg as well as power and torque. Has anyone with a remap actually noticed an improvement in MPG overall? The fabia already has around 220 lbft of torque (more than my mondeo V6) so I can live with that, but if a remap is going to give me more economy and more power and torque as a bonus, all for around £300, be rude not to!

oh yes mine works very well, better mpg as you can leave the car in a higher gear..... not that you would

I didn't have a remap but decided on one of the piggy back modules for my Beemer 325 tds. My theory was that I could remove it when I sold the car .... except I forgot .

Power went up to 170bhp with a big splurge of torque across the range. Economy did suffer a bit but 40mpg wasn't too bad considering the performance increase.

It was quite impressive for an oil burner but you wouldn't want to follow it for long due to the extra exhaust emissions [cough cough]

Citroen Xsara 2ltr HDI. Prior to having it done, 110bhp and 47mpg. After it had been done 140bhp and 55mpg. So I would say yes it does improve economy. HTH Ray

Yep, definately work, done on 3 occcassions 2 with VAG engines a 130tdi & a 150 tdi but went with (as above ) piggy back, as opposed to remap. Good stuff though! you get what you pay for! always got my money back on resale of units as opposed to remap which will go with the car when sold.


Go for it either way!

a guy i work with has the same car and had it done recently he says the mpg has went up and the power is amazing

I want to get my passat done. 110 to 142 bhp and an extra 10mpg.

It does seem to work best with VAG's.

I have a vw tdi 115 which Chris Gamlin had remapped as previous owner. mpg figures obviously depend on your right foot (and take quoted bhp increase figures with a pinch of salt) but mine (same engine but smaller injectors and smaller turbo) produces a lot more torque lower down so you tend not to have to rev the engine as all the grunt is lower down and you tend to shift earlier to use the torque than letting the engine try to rev which it will, but acceleration is quicker and fuel consumption lower if you effectively short shift. Being a 6-speed you have plenty of gears to keep it going with the torque.

ps the car will feel much quicker but will likely suffer a fair bit of wheelspin being a light, fwd car with so much torque. My traction control works overtime in the first 2-3 gears in the wet and you can't just boot it to get the power down coming off a roundabout without the front trying to drift out.

I'm thinking of getting one for my Landrover TD5 Discovery, its meant to make a great improvment (135bhp to 160-70bhp + extra torque).

Only problem is I got a quote from my current insurers and was horified at the extra premium needed. Admittedly they are not Landrover insurance specialists, so I should get a better deal when I renew next month with another company (It was'nt worth changing policy when I got my Disco as I only had a few months left to run).

One things for sure, make sure you DO notify your insurance.

On the decision between add on box/full remap I had always been told/read that the former is just a fudge and that it can not deliver the flexibilty that a proper remap can deliver. Indeed, even my local Landrover dealer was offering fully authorised remaps, so I would certainly be going that route.

I have been with mainstream insurers the last couple of years with my remap declared, just renewed with HIC and saved over a hundred quid. Adrian flux were cheaper than my renewal too, so worth checking out when that time of year comes round...

Gave me 10% more power and 20% more torque on my high mileage Audi A4 TDi 90 and improved mpg by 5. So yep it worked and made the much more driveable. However the 160K clutch didn't like it an would shudder after an hour or so driving so I've had to remove it. Boy does it feel slow now!

experts on VAG group of engines, they did my A6 1.8T remap. basically they had it on the rollers for aobut 3 hours remapping the ECU and did a fantastic job. went from 150bhp to 225 bhp for about £400.00

well worth the money

Tweaked the turbo and injection pump on my 1.5td Corsa myself mainly to get the turbo pumping. Upped the boost to 14psi and increased the fueling. Purely mechanical pump though, no electronics on this one!

Huge increase in performance and the mpg went up from mid 40's to around 60mpg daily work journey.

Shame the bodywork fell off....

Yes they do work quite well on tdi's.

I'm a TurboChip dealer and have been mapping all sorts of cars, particularily VAGs, RR Sport, Discovery etc.

Average power gains are 30-55bhp depending on model. Torque is the favourite, more torque , less gearchanges and stress.

There is usually some improvement in mpg depending on how you drive. I've not yet anyone who gets less than before.

Chip boxes are manufacturer dependent. Some are just plain awful, they just up the fuel rail pressure causing all sorts of problems with wear.
The good boxes usually perform other functions such as turbo boost, injection pulse timing etc.

You pays your money and takes your choice.

So Rob would you recommend the remap? From what I've read it does sound like the piggy backs just increase fuelling in most cases.

I have a Vectra C Estate - 3.0 V6 CDTi. I bought a CRD2 power module from www.dieseltuninguk.com and the transformation is phenomenal. You can change the maps yourself and has given me an increase in mpg.

Its great when you can outpace so called performance cars - my lad still cannot accept me keeping him at bay in his Clio 172 sport

Well worth the money and it is so easy to install and remove

If it was my car I would go for a remap rather than a chipbox. I did on my RR Sport.

The good remaps have many hours of dyno time put into them. Beware cheap offers. Many are just a straight generic map replace without regard to car model, year, ecu variant, software variant.

I'm hoping very soon to open tuning premises in W. yorks complete with 4wd Rolling road along with alignment gear etc etc. I will then be able to back up any hp claims.

One thing to keep in mind with modern turbo diesels is the the MAS (Mass Airflow Sensors) drift out of calibration due to contamination from road water spray. If the MAS airflow sensor is telling porkies it has a major effect on performance VW and BMW (including Rover) diesels have well known problems with this.
