List of suitable front hub donors.

Does anyone know of a suitable donor for front hubs (for use in conjunction with double wishbone suspension arms)? The Cortinas mentioned in "the book" are getting rather difficult to come by and last time I went to the scrap yard, everyone seemed to be using McPherson struts. I only need small ones.

What have you all used on your projects?

Is it worth compiling a list of suitable donors?

The breakers yard near me (Glenfield) is has quite a few Cortinas. I think he had half a dozen to a dozen earlier in the year along with a Zephir on a container box. Apparently one of the mates of his does banger racing and it really into them and he has started to twig onto kit builders being after really old stuff. I think there may have been the odd early escort too.

As he told me, he has a yard full of nearly new broken cars and no one is interested in them, they just want the old Fords.

Triumph herald / vitesse / spitfire
Ford Cortina
Ford Granada
Ford Escort
Ford sierra with modified upright
Mazda MX5 / Miata
MG Metro / MGF / MGTF
Elise
S2000
Corvette

The Triumph stuff is available but some types are not suitable as they're not strong enough IIRC. These were all designed for light, small, slow and not very powerful cars by todays standards. I'm sure there some threads about what the limitations of these parts are for seven type cars.

MX5 looks like the best modern donor. Plenty around and been around for a while. There must be a few scrapped Elises by now, the car's been out for ten years. IIRC Elises actually use MGF bearings and axles in bespoke uprights. Given the popularity of the MGF/TF and seeing how many MGBs are still on the road (future parts availability) this has to be worth a look.

The S2000 and Corvette uprights would be ideal for a bigger power car. Proven ability and, in the case of the Vette, lots of aftermarket stuff available to change wheel sizes and brakes. Not exactly cheap though but if I was designing an Ultima type middy I'd start here.
