temerature sensor / gauge question

hey

in a mate's car is a strange temperature gauge
There is a smalle copper tube going from the sensor to the gauge.
He thinks it's one from a mg b.
But the thing isn't working and i don't know how we can test this.
Somebody knows how we can test it? and how it works?

It's a capillary gauge. If it doesn't work, throw it away and buy another one!

Temp gauge

AS the above post says.
It is the capillary type gauge.

You can disconnect the sender from the engine & place into boiled ( Very hot ) water for a while.
This should give some reading at the gauge end.
If it fails to read it is most likey FUBAR & will have to be replaced.

They are pretty accurate but also a bit vulnerable! You need to be very careful with the capillary - try running it so that you don't have to bend it too often.

It is possible to repair these.I have repaired a couple over the years whilst owning an MGB.
You need to find the break in the capillary tube first and repair it , then obtain some ether and a syringe with needle.Drill a small hole in the bulb and inject enough ether to about half fill it.The difficult part is then to solder the hole without loosing all the ether or setting fire to yourself in the process.
It takes some trial and error but i had the gauge reading accurately when tested in boiling water and ice after a couple of attempts.
If ether is difficult to obtain the easy start would work as its basically the same .
