release bearing

Hi, ive tried fitting the relese bearing and arm to my gearbox the other day, but struggled to get the release bearing in.

My question is, should the bearing slide al the way down the shaft of the gearbox, i.e over the sleeve part, or just sit loosly over the spline part?

Thanks for your help,

Theo

The release bearing normally sits on the sleved portion of the input shaft

Might help if we knew what gearbox you are using and possibly the part number of the bearing? The bearing should be an easy sliding fit over the sleeve . If it is tight you will have problems

To use a second-hand release bearing might be taking "Locost " too far.

I would buy a new one - they're not that expensive- and then you won't curse yourself as you take the gearbox off yet again

I got mine from my local Ford agent in Maidstone. It helps if you can quote a Registration No for the donor car or at least model/year.

I have seen posts about different drive shaft lengths and different no of splines so it is possible, I suppose, that there might be different shaft thicknesses.

Burton Power might be able to help too - www.burtonpower.com. Looking at their catalogue, they show 2 release bearings

HD3257 - bore 34.92, OD 66.0

HD3259 - bore 38.25, OD 68.5

I'm sure their sales people on 0208 518 9191 would be happy to advise.
