Tin-Top Gearbox
The gearbox on my Pug 106 has suddenly started making allot of noise
at the moment I suspect that at least 1 bearing is dead on either the output shaft or diff
its a 1992 1.0 car with 4 speed 'MA4' box
anyone here have any experience with these gearboxes ? or know were I can get another cheep ?
unfortunately this now means that the kit is 'on hold' until its fixed/ replaced

The 4 speed boxes are easy enough to strip out if you've done a gearbox before.
TBH though it would be cheaper and easier to pt a s/h box in though, same as the AX so should be a few about 5 speed will fit too.

Thanks for that, I haven't done a gearbox before but I'm sure I'd manage (eventually) if I find a manual that covers it
also I didn't know the ax's used the same box
so far I've found 1 'tested' s/h box for £70 - but its 200 miles away

I have done two on my daughters 106. Local scrappy had several and a saxo box is currently in. Nice light box and easy to do. Support the engine,
remove left front wheel , caliper, hub and half shaft and remove box.
Not fun outdoors at the moment.
Why twice. First time I did it, gave it back to her and got a call half an hour later asking what I had done with fifth gear. Scrappy had supplied
four speed box by mistake. How we chuckled.

Get the linkage as well
I'm sure 5 speed was different on my sister's Saxo.

ISTR on Pug boxes of this era the nut at the end of the main shaft comes undone --- can be fixed in car by removing the end cover.
However i might be a more serious fault sometimes seen on Rover 214 which use the Pug box the final drive gear is also known to move on the
differential.

I've now also been told it could be that a diff pinion is broken and a bit of it is stuck between the crown wheel and one of the shafts
I can get it recon'd (assuming its only bearings) for ~£180+VAT or get the bearings & seals and do it myself for ~£80+VAT
I suppose I'd better get it out/ open it up and find out whats wrong
one thing I can't seem to find anywere is a way of telling the ratio's without opening it up to count the teeth - can anyone help with
this ?

If it is the diff pinnion it is highly likely the casing has damage ---
