R1 5VY Uprated Clutch

Hi All

I posted a while agoasking for advice on uprated clutch parts for a 5JJ. Stupid me - I've got a 5VY (2005)!

I had the car on the rolling road today and we may have had some clutch slip (or wheel spin) so I want to uprate the clutch before my first event this Saturday! It's an engine out job so I need to get my act together! ANy advice?

Some say just up the springs to Barnett, but I have done the full clutch.
The Barnett clutch has 80% more surface area, so the springs are uprated to maintain the same pressure on the plates.
Somehow, although I think the springs will work on the standard clutch, I don't trust how long it will last.
Especially if you are racing, then I would fit the entire Barnett kit.
I bought mine on ebay for £95, but as the MotaLeira is not finished, I haven't tried it yet.

Chris that is why I kept the original plates....just in case!
Hopefully I won't have to refit them.

You can upgrade the springs to EBC heavy duty for not much money. But you can also do what the Yamaha race kit YEC suggests.

Replace the inner and outer clutch plates (The inner half one inc 2 spacers and the outer thin one) with normal size plates so you have 9 all the same size.
You will need to change the inner metal plate as it will be scored, though it is the same size as the others.

The YEC kit also has a treated clutch basket part for durability but you don't need that to change the plates over and it is £££

One small detail that rarely seems to be mentioned when discusssing BEC clutches is the oil you are using. Do not use a car specific oil. Use an oil intended for bike motors. High spec car specific oils contain friction reducing agents that do not mix well with wet clutches. I have seen this a number of times.

Oil change = No more clutch slip

So much for guaranteed next day delivery! I'm glad I didn't pull the engine out last night! I checked the free play in the clutch arm and there wasn't any, so maybe it was just that.

I'll run it as it is on Saturday and if it slips, I'll take it home and change the springs ready for Sunday!
