young lads laptop problem

Ok so when the laptop is turned on it ALWAYS wants to do a disc check thingy. Even when you let it go through all the motions the next time you turn it on it wants to do it again EVERYTIME. Usual teenager type of guy so the question "how long's it been like that " gets the answer "a few months ish or longer ish I don't know" At the moment I'm downloading sp1 so i can do that at the same time. Also the screen flickers at start up untill all of the programs/files/whatever have finished loading and then all is Ok
It's a dell inspiron model 1501 running vista (shite to work with IMHO used to xp)

Anyone of you IT gurus got some/any fixes for me. Numpty terms please.

If it looks wrong it probably is wrong.

Not a fix but it might help to just close the thing or put it into hibernate rather than turn it off.

My laptop hasn't been switched off in months. Doesn't do it any harm. I'm running vista and apart from it constantly asking permission to do anything I find it much better than XP.
