Which Tin Top? Anyone drive any of these?

Afternoon,

I currently drive a Fabia vrs (2nd one I've had) and feel like getting something a bit more exciting for a change.

I've been looking for a hot hatch or similar and like the 172, EP3 civic type r, octavia 1 vrs, and astra GSI turbo (G mk4) and a load of others I can't afford..................

I'm swayed toward the type r and having driven one yesterday I thought it was great, it was a 5.5 year model though with the revised engine etc. Does anyone have experience of the off cam performance of the 2001-2003 type r? If it's as bad as reported then I don't know if I could live with it (although as stated I found the facelift one ok)

I can't have a 172 as much as I like them due to the boot, I have 2 kids and all the stuff that goes with them, y'know nagging wife, prams etc, which is why I can't stop thinking that the octy would be good. Now I have already had one before when I was sans children and thought it was a great car, although admittedly not as involving as a true hot hatch.

I also had an Astra 2.0 SRi mk4 for 2 years and loved the car and it's boot etc and was wondering if the GSI is any good, I have driven one, in 2003, but the only thing I can remember is that it didn't feel as quick as it should have ?!? But I was a bit de-sensitised back then.

Right then, anyone who has experience of, or owns any of these, fight your corner and tell me why I should buy it! Advise greatly appreciated as I'm going around in bloody circles and it's getting difficult to type.......

I've got an Octavia 1 RS estate. It was a little underwhelming performance wise, but a remap has helped drastically. Really quite good and has a huge boot!!

The Honda every time.......Bullett proof engines Honda have never had a v-tec failure. Reliability is factastic, build quality is good. You won't get any torque steer. I have driven loads of type r's new and old (all co. cars). The new shape is much better than the old for a number of reason. I may be slighlty bias because I work for a Honda dealership......

with 140 ft/lb and no diff I doubt it would torque steer!

I know they're reliable and honda claim to have never had a failure down attributed to anything other than lack of maintenance but that is also very true of other performance cars that are festidiously maintained, more of a play on words than anything else IMHO

I'm just concerned about the flexibility of the engine, as I know it would result in a lot of missed opportunities on the road.

How about an Accord Type-R?

Plenty of space, and supposedly a very capable chassis. Might be worth a look, and think of all the practicality points from the Mrs!

Civic - yes please. I love that engine, and the handling is awesome.

Astra - no no no no no. They are just so dull, even if they do have a turbo.

Octavia - practical, safe handling, reasonably quick.

How about a Golf R32? Its a corker of an engine, but might be a bit steep to run!

Good luck, and let us know what you decide on.

This should also be on your list. 225bhp as standard, VW platform underneath, great to drive, reliable, good running costs, better looking (IMHO) than the Civic, Astra, Golf etc.

Wish I still had my old TDI version

as above, the leon is great but over powered when mapped (275bhp)

octy VRS mapped would be good, for you with the kids etc. i bet you can get them for great money now

Get a skyline, fun everyday, admittedly I don't have kids to fit in but it puts a smile on your face for the commute to work
and you don't see half as many about as the overated hot hatch

She has just told me I can't have a type r as the gear shift looks like a bent nob coming out of the dash and outside it looks like an old mans car!

The octys are so so so cheap but don't know if it'll quench my thirst for a buzzy little hot hatch, same goes for the leon, looked into it but don't think it's what I crave to drive if that makes sense.

I cn't stop thinking that I really want a 172 cup, it's the 1.9 205 I'll never own, wondering if I can get away with it if I give her the big pram and keep the pushchair in my boot instead..................

PS looked at Skyline R32s & golf R32s and they are in range but steep looking to run, admittedly the GTR is probably worth every penny though

The new-shape Leon is a different beast from the previous one (which was good IMO), but the handling is excellent. Or an Altea if you want some brownie points with the missus, but the same handling? I've towed our Indy on a trailer with our Altea (cough...diesel...cough), albeit slowly having been stitched up with a twin-axle trailer.

I was loaned a 6-speed turbo petrol Leon once when it was in for service though. Don't rule it out - it was manic!
