Gearchange linkage stiction
v8kid - 10/7/07 at 12:34 PM

I'm having problems with excessive friction in the gearchange linkage. I'm using rose joints 'cos they are self alligning but they are a bit stiff. What are you guys using for bearings in your linkages?

some pics of my mock up linkage
in this thread which works well, using rod ends.

Cheers

What size rose joints are you using? I am using M6 which move nicely - anything bigger might be a bit tight until they are 'run in'. You might try some ptfe lubricant (not oil or grease as it could swell the bearing liner.

as just said, they're probably just tight. Sit in the car and waggle the stick for a while, you'll probably find it frees up nicely after a while.... Some lube will help also...

Tried waggling the stick a bit and got fed up. Took off rose joints, smeared them with valve grinding paste and run them on the cordless drill untill they got hot

Some of them freed up nicely and others didn't make a difference.

Overall no change.

I think it must be when load is put on the linkage the sliding contacts "dig in".

Back to the drawing board I'm afraid

Maybe the grinding paste was a bit drastic
Have a look at the leverage aspect in the system - longer / shorter lever length could make quite a difference.
