Wtd Bits of Scaffolding pole, buy rent borrow....

Following on from my post about lathes, I'm going to go for an 11" Harrison.

Has anyone in the South Yorkshire area got a few bits of scaffolding pole I can buy, rent or borrow, to roll it into position Egyptian style? I don't want to commit unless I can move it into position, the seller I'm talking with can drop it onto the flat bit of my driveway, but it needs to go 25 or metres further to the back of my garage.

Why is it there is no one local building or extending when you need it.......

Cheers.

Pete.

Maybe not ideal but Aldi had some machine lift skates in last week for £7.99. Rated to 250kg each. Not sure of lathe weight, but I'd imagine around 750kg.
I just used 3 skates to shift a 450kg hot tub 25m with no problems. Handy bits of kit.

Nip into your local fab shop and get 3 x 3ft lengths of 20mm round bar, works a treat for moving Harrisons

its easier to lift one end 20mm with a pry bar than 50mm to get scaffolding tube under.

In fact for what you are moving and as a one off, you would get away with cutting up a broom handle or similar, once moved a skip using kids cricket wickets so it will work.

if you are going to hire something, why not get a 2tonne pallet lift

Lathes and pallet trucks are not a good mix, unless the lathe is strapped on a pallet in the first place, dead easy to turn and tip the thing straight off, no chance of tipping over if its only 20mm off the ground.

The company that moved my lathe used "industrial roller skates" - worked well, but hard on less than tough flooring (e.g. block paving) as they had very small wheels.

Be very careful moving lathes - they're very top-heavy when not standing still on firm ground.
