Anyone bought some 2K metallics recently?
How much paint / lacquer will i need to paint my ZR in one colour and roughly how much am i looking at for paint, lacquer, thinners etc.
Im not after super expensive flip paint etc - just fairly std metallic. Something like that Orange colour on the Halfords BTCC car in my race car
livery thread??
Am i in the right ball park at about £20/litre for paint, £10/litre lacquer, approx 1 litre of each. Approx £45 with thinner and hardner??
Can i just tag on a question or 2 about flip paints??
Are they super expensive?
If my rear arches etc get stonechipped are they easy to touch in or will they need repaint?
If a panel or 2 did need repainting are they easy to match or does it not really mater on cars like ours?
For lacquers - are there fancy lacquers that can be put onto std metallic to give a different effect? Again how does this affect price and future
maintenance?

I brought some standard black Cellulose( not metalic) recently £13 per litre.
Primer £10 per litre.
Like everything you get what you pay for. If you get cheap paint the finish might not be great and the clear may peel...
I used the following to paint my car:-
1 coat of this:-

Not thinned.
2 coats of this:-

Thinned 60/40 with:-

3 coats of this (metalic blue):-

Thinned 50/50 with:-

I did another 2 coats of this in silver where I needed the stripes.
3 coats of this:-

Not thinned.
It certainly wasn't cheap but I phoned them up as I hadn't ordered paint to spray a whole car before and this is what they recommended so
they got me on service. Probably cost me about £300 in paint to do the whole car. If you're unsure what you need the bloke on the end of the
phone is very helpful.

- it is quite hard to tell since this is separate from any other painted section - the human eye
is very good at detecting differences in colour if they are adjacent, much less so if they are apart. If you are able to paint consistently, they
you'll get a way with it - but unless someone is specifically looking for flaws, they won't notice. And make sure you buy some spare paint
for the future or buy it from the same manufacturer. Darren,
How much you will need will depend on the colour, as some colours cover much better than others.
I used 2 lts of bascoat and used it all, but really needed another coat in a few areas.
2 lts of lacquer should be enough though.
You can use cellulose which is cheaper but the end result will be nowhere near as good or as durable.
As was said earlier though, 2K is better but contains isocyanates which are not good for you. I used to paint this with no mask when I was younger and
stupid but it is not recommended.
Flip paints are very difficult to apply correctly and are not recommended for a novice. unless you are very careful you get varying colour depths
whcih end up looking streaky. And it is very expensive!!
Metaillics are OK. Light ones are difficult to touch in but darker ones are fine. You could go for a compromise with a 2 stage pearl which is like a
finer metallic but with a better flip colour and is easier to apply.
Any areas of bare ally will need etch priming to ensure the paint sticks. This is also nasty stuff as it is carcinagenic (gives you cancer.
I should have said that i wont be painting it. I have a painter just needed some paint advice. Iam aware of the dangers etc.
Ive been investigating oranges. I dont want the car to look like a tango advert. Does anyone know what the Range Stormer (Range Rover concept -
forerunner to the Sport) colour is?? I have been told either tangiers orange or vesuvious orange. I have also been led to believe that both have
different metallic and pearl options. I like the way that it is darker and warmer than normal orange but seems to change shades. I guess this is a
product of some pearl in the paint.

Well worth a read
Many Thanks Mark. Highly appreciated. I didnt read it all but got the jist very quickly. Sounds like my plan of paying £400 all in to get someone to
paint it for me is a very small price to pay. I too have kids and whilst i knew 2K is bad news its good to hear from the pro's just how nasty it
is. Thanks again.
It does now make me think about those times ive sprayed bits with a spray can and just left the garage door open for ventilation - mmmmmmmm maybe not
a good idea. That thread will certainly make me think twice next time.
This painting advice now ranks up there with the horror i have experienced with antifreeze in the last 6 / 7 months. Isnt it amazing how we play down
home hobbies without realising the true dangers????
