My sentiments exactly. normally i would expect avatars to be kept to a minimum size but this is one that should be huuuge. How are we expected to win the World Cup when some countries will play dirty and place such luvverliees at the touch line????????

If the teams looked like that I'd start watching for sure. Make a template from something cheap to get the size and shape somewhere close then take it easy and cut slots for the corners so it doesn't crease when you bend it over the rail.

yours, Pete

I went into the RSPCA office the other day. It was so small you could hardly swing a cat in there.

I like your avatar, you see worse on childrens televison these days !

Anyway your question....

As ali is very soft beat it with something softer, rubber mallet etc. Personally I prefer to beat it around the tubes using a flat piece of soft wood.

To dress it around the rear you will need to start in the middle at the bottom, hold it in place across the back then gently beat it under the overhang going towards the ends of the car. Once you have got this started you should be able to clamp the lower edge out of site.

Where the metal goes around bends you will be trying to bend the ali in two planes, this is very hard so on the bends the overlap only wants to be 1cm. You form the vertical edge then slap the horizontal return. Where the metal is straight you can have a 2+cm return, its easy to cut the metal wide then trim back to the tube.

For the top the same rules apply, with the bottom tube clamped securely in place(use a few rivits out of sight).

In summary

* Do not use metal hammers.
* Only bend in one plane if possible, if bending in two planes reduce the lip.

Good luck

Regards Mark

Mark has got it about right. Where the aluminium is going round a radius it needs to be shrunk. This is achieved using a wooden "Slapper" or soft face hammer. Never use a metal hammer for this job as it will stretch rather than shrink. As aluminium, even 99% pure, is hammered it will work harden so when that happens, it can be annealed to make it more malleable. To anneal, if you have oxy-acetylene, use a smokey flame and darken the area to be annealed. Then, care is needed here, using a neutral flame heat the metal until the black disappears. This will make the aluminium much work "Workable". Another tip is to clamp the aluminium to the metal tube so that it starts to form exactly where you want it to. It is not too easy to clamp to a round tube especially on a bend. However it is not impossible if you use a series of G clamps and flexible plywood to provide even pressure to hold the aluminium firmly against the steel tube. Harwood dollies can be made with the radii of curvature you need. Be patient. Metal responds to many lightish blows rather than a few heavy ones. You may need to anneal more than once. I would recommend using 99% pure aluminium rather than NS4 wherever shaping is needed. I can recommend the metal shaping series of videos by Ron Fournier that are sold by Frosts. Not expensive and well worth the money.

Maradona, when I posted my reply, I forgot that you are in Argentina. I am sorry. Buying from Frosts may not be convenient for you but Ron Fournier has a website www.fournierenterprises.com and you will be able to purchase videos directly from him. They really do tell you all you need to know about metal shaping.

Cheers
