An Engine Game!

Hi Locosters.

As I'm sure you are aware you are all more knowledgeable than me and I wanted to see what your take on the following game would be.

The rules are as follows:

You must buy an engine.
You have up to £1500.
You have a chassis designed for a car engine (unfeasible to be a BEC).
You already have a type 9 gearbox (assume sale will add £100 to the money you have to spend).

Once the money has been spent the engine should be in a state in which it is transferable into a car (i.e. complete with gearbox, necessary ancillaries and megasquirt). You don't need to buy an exhaust with this money though.

Any money you have left over can be used to enhance the engine. Lowest cost to highest bhp ratio wins!

To get the ball rolling heres my 2 first ideas:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Vauxhall-RedTop-C20XE-2-0-16v-Engine_W0QQitemZ250351227580QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM?hash=item25035122 7580&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=72%3A1299%7C66%3A2%7C65%3A12%7C39%3A1%7C240%3A1318

and use the rest of the money getting it in the car. (No idea how much this would cost for new bellhousing etc!)

OR

Or pushing the budget

Having previously gone down the RX8 route with my old Caterham, I would agree that you can indeed get the engine and box on budget, but you will have to spend another grand on bits to make it run outside it's intended application!

engine

2.0 L zetec that means most bits will
swap over alternator starter ect.

Inlet Manifold

Rs turbo exhaust manifold and turbo.

Decompresion plate

Arp rod bolt set

megasquirt 1 kit

Doable if you can fabricate bits your self and should give 250bhp

lots of change for the hidden extras

If only I could weld (I assume thats what you mean by "fabricate"!)

On the wankel engine front I would be worried that I wouldn't know what to do if something went wrong!

Ah wow is that actually a duratec or a zetec badged as a duratec? I'm not sure which ones are the dodgy ones!

I was looking into duratec rwd conversion costs and they seem to be very high, any ideas on value? New bellhousing, water rail, sump etc, could be 1k even?

somebody might be able to say why it's not possible, but a Mk3 golf 16v (ABF) Gti engine gave 150bhp as standard, and was readilly mappable for 170bhp (£150).... tiger's belgian agent sells bell housings to mount VW engines to type 9 (pricey at ~£500) , and the engine was fitted N/S in passats so sumps not a problem (~£25).

Having driven a mk3 gti for a couple of years previously, it is a great engine so have never understood why no-body puts it into sevens? - is it coz it's too tall?

cheers big wasa, that N/A option looks very appealing!

Although c20xe will give 150bhp for less monies?

Not a chance will you install the red top for less than a zetec.

you will get more power out of a standard red top how ever.

I still think the zetec wins on the bhp/ £

Buy an mot failer 2.0 mondeo and transplant the lot in to the kit.

add a super chip and thats a complete install and 150bhp for the price of the red top engine.

Wow indeed But with 5 bids and 7 days to run added to the fact you will need a gearbox that going to be well outside your £1500 imho

I wont need a gearbox as it comes included, but I will need a new propshaft and it will end up selling for a far greater amount of money than it is showing at the minute. A man can dream!

Zetec is looking like the cheapest good option with c20xe being a moderately more expensive choice but with a higher standard spec I think.

How long can i resist the temptation to drop a V8 in?

yep the zetec will need a set of cams and some head work to get the 200bhp that the red top is going to give with tb's and a good exhaust.
So only gives the better bhp/£ at the top end of your budget.

anything RWD and with a volvo badge .

you could use the extra £100 for something else since youll get a decent gearbox with the whole car .

whole car .

about £500 (maybe less if your good) later , youll have 250bhp

unfortunately the chassis is already made for a pinto, so some modification is allowed, but not a complete change!

That'll mean the V12 is out the window too then..
