Dry Sump On The Cheap.... Possible?
Hi All,
I'm looking at converting my engine to run a dry sump, this is normally very expensive with the purchase of an external pump etc, I'm a
tight ass so want to do it on the cheap
Anyway, my engine conveniently has a power steering pump located on the side of it (which I am not using as I have fitted a manual rack)
My idea (shamlessly stolen from a friend) is to use this pump as a scavenger pump and retain the cars main oil pump for the high pressure side, maybe
a diagram will make things clearer...
I assume the flow rate is adequate on the power steering pump?
800RPM 2.68GPM
2KRPM 6.7GPM
4KRPM 13.4GPM
5KRPM 16.75GPM
6KRPM 20.1GPM
My only other concern is that the scavenger pump (power steering pump) will be frequently sucking in lots of air which will cause an issue if these
pumps do not self prime... does anyone know if these pumps will self prime? (if not I will obviously test first!)
Other than the above two concerns, can anyone else forsee any major problems I have missed?

Just take the sump plug out. Then you will have a cheap dry sump
Sorry couldnt resist. My coat is on.

Have a look at http://www.toymods.org.au/forums/showthread.php?t=15804
Apparently formula vauxhall cars have a dry sump using a gear pump and I have a note that the pump produced 50l/min at 7000 engine rpm if that helps.
I've also heard (some) volvos have external oil coolers with separate pumps that are suitable - no idea which ones though.
If power steering pumps are gear pumps they will self prime.

Suspect (guess) volvo's from colder countries so the oil can be heated and circulated before you start the engine.
