It's legal if you pay the duty, I'm sure the govt will send you lots of forms to fill in.

You can certainly smell those who are using ex-chippie oil, not sure about people buying new

I'm sure it's been discussed on here before.

It smells like a doughnut stand on the Sunday market, how can you call that stink compared to an old Transit belching black smoke every time it pulls away?

afaik for some cars its not so easy. I know a transport company that has the kit to convert used oil. They spent thousands on the kit, took some time to perfect and control the process. All duties etc fully paid. Apparently it has to be converted properly to remove glycerol etc otherwise the filters can get blocked quickly. I guess that the ebay system doesnt remove such products hence why only suitable for certain cars.
My mate who runs the company has used it in his Merc 270D. He recommends 50/50 with pump diesel in cars and has found that he gets slightly better mpg using it. The wagons can use it 100%.

Does anyone know of a reason why this shouldnt be used in a BMW 320D (2002 150bhp model)?? Curiouskly the instruction book simply says dont use biodiesel but they usually take a safe view.

Used BioDiesel neat and in blends for over a year now.

Great stuff and made from recycled veg oil.

This debate has been covered before on this forum.

Difference between BioDiesel and straight veg oil is the thickness of the liquid. Lucas/Cav pumps will be destroyed using unheated veg oil. Hence the twin tank systems which preheat the oil before going into the pump. Bosch pumps work better with veg oil. Biodiesel can be used in almost any diesel but best check with your waranty people first. (That's just my disclaimer, as far as I know you can put Bio in ANY diesel. Oil companies don't want you to though)

Anyway, I've said this before and no one listened then so there we go.

Use at owners risk.

Cheers

Mark

Been looking into converting my 4.2 TD Land Cruiser to ease the pain of filling the tank. There are issues with running WVO instead of new v.oil from the bottle. If you use new oil, it seems to work well. Beware running straight Bio Diesel, as it will eat rubber hoses. From what I can gather, most cars built after '93, have hoses that are Bio Diesel proof.

You need to register with Cutoms and Excise and pay 20 something pence per litre duty on whatever fuel you use. If you get stopped, you are as guilty as running your car on red diesel, and the same penalties apply.

A lot of info on the net if you are interested.

Forgot to say that you must pay duty on both types of fuel.

New veg oil gets the same duty at the moment as standard dino diesel.

BioDiesel and waste veg oil get the lower tax.

I buy commercial tax paid biodiesel which is not much less than dino per litre.

As for the rubber issue, if your diesel can run on standard low sulphur diesel, it can also run on biodiesel.

Biodiesel is also widely regarded as being better for your engine. Straight veg oil needs a lot more care and more regular sump oil changes etc.

Do some research on the net and then make your own mind up.

Cheers

Running you vehicle on SVO or WVO Straight / waste Veg oil will get you done by the Customer and Excise.

They deem it NOT to be a fuel. However, it does work.

To produce you need to be a registered fuel producer, and then pay the Duty on what you produce.

You have to make an "Ester type diesel" to qualify.
ie Processed SVO / WVO is OK, when processed with Sodium hydroxide and Methanol, as it produces a Methyl Ester BioDiesel. With tax puts it in the 60p per litre area (ISH!!). of course depends on the price of your components etc.

Avoiding paying duty will get your vehicle siezed, and probably destroyed, or sold off to fund the Govt's coffers.
There are pleanty of sites on h0w to make biodiesel. You can run your motor on SVO/WVO, but you really need to start on normal diesel, warm engine, and heat the SVo, switch over, RUN.... before shutting off the engine switch back to road diesel to prime the system / clear the SVO ready for the next cold start.
Easier to make biodiesel!!

I know a couple of people doing this... One of them's wife is a C&Excise officer...

Its easy to make... nasty chemicals though.

Top Gear did it a couple of years ago, adding a teaspoon of turps (white spirit) to a litre of vegetable oil. I think it was a Merc 190 they ran on it under AA supervision and said it was a succesful test.

I use about 60 litres of diesel a week. thats gonna be a lot of bottles and a lot of hassle to go cooking oil.....

if it causes your engine problems, you save a few pounds on the fuel, and lose a few 1000 on a new engine. (unless the car is an old wreck)

A friend of mine ran a Transit on old chip fat. I'm told that there's a bloke round here who flogs the stuff (duty paid).

It pays to have a heating element in the tank, so you'll need some high AH batteries to lessen the fluid's viscosity prior to starting (at this time of year anyway)

Another friend is converting his transit soon. He's a former development engineer for Rover and tends to know his stuff, to a depth that I can barely comprehend.

If it was a bad thing, he wouldn't do it. So chin up chaps, and think of the positives.

Cheers,

Neil.

possibility of long term engine damage ( no additives or decoking agents)
possiblilty of catalyst damage?
your car being taken by customs and excise
the hassle of having to get lots of bottles of oil
putting heaters in the tank cos its too viscous and your car might not work well in the cold and you need bigger batteries (fire risk of heater in tank?)
your vehicle smell s like a chip shop

the positives?

its cheaper.

surely only worth the hassle if you do serious miles, and that in itself means lots of bottles of oil. I cant see myself popping into tesco each friday for 60 litres of cooking oil.

I use 3k of diesel a year, and would stand to save 1500 quid plus. But im not taking the hassle or the risk.

if you are doing 12k ave miles a year on 45mpg thats 266 gals at 90p. cost in litres 1090 quid cooking oil would save perhaps 55p a litre?

so thats 420 a year for chip oil.

saving 670 a year - about 13 quid a week. Work out the depreciation on your car and its gonna be more than that alone if you run a newish car. how much is a new engine or loss of warranty on a newish car?

surely its only worth it if you are cash strapped with an old vehicle?

Once again it is completely legal to use veg oil in your car. It is very illegal to not pay the duty. So your car won't get taken away and crushed if you pay the duty.

(big pain in the arse, but not beyond anyone who can get a car through SVA)

Also this guy approximates £10 a tank saving after duty paid...

From:
http://www.ravenfamily.org/andyg/vegoil.htm

Here's what you have to do:

1. Register with Customs and Excise
2. Keep your reciepts
3. Fill in a monthly tax return

First, get notice 179E and form EX103 from HM Customs & Excise.

Fill in the EX103 declaring the purpose of your business as a private individual using vegetable oil as a motor vehile fuel and stating the description as jerrycan(s) marked SVO in porch/shed/wherever. Attach a letter explaining that the oil is a diesel quality liquid fuel produced from biomass or waste cooking oil, the ester content of which is not less than 96.5% by weight; and the sulphur content of which does not exceed 0.005% by weight. Explain that your feedstock is commercial cooking oil and/or waste cooking oil and give the following details:

* Vegetable oil is produced from biomass.
* Fatty acids are esters, so the ester content is 99% approx.
* The sulphur content is 0.002% by weight (see this assay by German vegoil company Elsbett).

(Important note: I've only just found the Elsbett assay as the supermarkets refused to provide this information under an absurd "commercially confidential" smokescreen, so I'll be writing to HMCE with these details myself. I'll update this page with how I get on)

Remember to give an estimate of your monthly usage: For an individual, this will be small: less than 100 litres. Don't forget to include a contact phone number in case they have any further questions.

The completed EX103 should be sent to HMCE, Mineral Oils Relief Centre, Dobson House, Regent Centre, Gosforth, Newcastle-on-Tyne NE3 3PF.

Every month, you will be sent an HO 930. It's a moderately scary-looking form but filling it is is dead easy. It's detailed in the 179E leaflet:

At the bottom of the list of duty types, make the blank row read: ORR 33589 Biodiesel and then your quantity and calculated duty payable. As I write, duty is 27.1p per litre. Sign and date the declaration, write a cheque to The Commissioners of Customs and Excise, and pop the form and cheque in the post.

Keep your receipts: You're required to keep them for six years. It's simplest if you just keep the paper receipts, stapled together so you have a bundle for each HO930 you've submitted.

And that's it! The forms look opaque but it's not hard really. If you get stuck, Customs' national enquiries help line is open 8am to 8pm Monday to Friday for all general questions on 0845 010 9000 (+44 208 929 0152 outside UK).

At 20 mpg, I've been looking into converting my Land Cruiser to run on either Straight Veg Oil, Filtered Waste Veg Oil, BioDiesel manufactured in the shed, or LPG. Loads of info out there. The Germans have been converting cars to run on veg oil for years, so it's not all doom and gloom

PS - surely, if you do it all legally, you will get taxed to fook and all the advantages go away..... so what we are talking about here is essentially tax evasion?
