Help Identifying Axle...

I have an axle that's said to be from a Mk5 Cortina. I've had a search on here and on Google, but there's nothing definite coming up.

The ratio is 3.45, and the tag has the following information...

3,45 2B09
P79B(or an 8)G(or a 6)-4004 NA

The case has the following...

71BG-4198-AC
G24526

Can anyone help out with an identification? Koln, Atlas, HD Atlas???

Thanks in advance.

Can you post a pic of the diff from the rear.

If it's the MK5 Cortina axle that I have (e.g. Koln) then it will have loops each side of the diff at the top for bushes.

See djtom's pic:

Cheers PJay... although I'm sure I've seen Atlas' as well with the loops.

I would say that is a Cortina atlas

Okay so looks to be a Koln. Unfortunately not the "preferred weapon of the aggressor" from a BHP point of view.

I'm currently thinking of a swap to Sierra diff etc. like djtom (hence the pic) since I'm looking to up the power on the Duratec.

What's your reason for you identying the axle (if you don't mind me asking)?

I thought a Koln and an Atlas were two entirely different axles - am I wrong?

I need to know what it is so I can decide if I'm keeping it and fitting an LSD. Needs to run 250bhp / 200 ft/lbs on a 650kg car.

From what I understand the Koln is certainly considered weaker than the Atlas (Burton Power refer to it in this way). Hopefully others here can comment on max. BHP etc.

In terms of LSD not sure what options exist for the Koln and Burton move straight on to the Atlas but this doesn't mean they don't exist.

Worth talking to a diff/axle expert outfit - can't remember ones that have been recommended but they've been referred to on here.

Be interested in the outcome though since going Sierra diff for me means de dion and a far amount of mods.

Apologies Scootz missed your mention of Atlas and hoops - not seen these myself but others should be able to comment.

Easiest way to identify between the Atlas and the Koln is the backplate bolt spacings, the Koln (as above) has an offset top bolt, the Atlas ones are evenly spaced.

DO NOT PUT ON KNOB OR BOLLOCKS!

Deffo a koln. I have one sat on my garage floor after replacing it with an atlas for more choice with different ratios.

What do people rate them to?

Stronger than an English I presume?

Thanks all... confirmed as being a Koln, so no use for my intentions

Would anyone like to buy a nice fresh looking Koln axle with 3,45 diff???
