Roll bar/cage type - Opinions

Hi,

Trying to decide which roll bar/cage to use on my Locoblade.

Car wil be road/track day with mostly only me in it.

Full cage like the MK one?

Slanted Dax type bar with petty bar?

Standard hoop with back stays and petty bar?

Trying to keep it sub £300.

It will be welded in place.

id never consider a slanted one, bloody rude to any potential passangers!

IMHO, best that you can afford, and exclude it from you weight saving plans. My current one is absolutely worthless, its about 3 inches below my helmet top anyway and is unbraced, in the wrong material My plan is to visit mr norden one day

yep mk one like mine, looks good IMHO and meets MSA standards. If I start to race then I will also be fitting side impact bars

Can some post a pic or link to the MK cage? I am in the planning stages of my own roll cage build and the MK site doesn't have much in the way of car pictures.

Edit - note how my head is taller than my current roll bar in the avatar.

Thats mine.. Cost was under $200USD.
I bought the bender which addes $400 but I intend to sell it now.

I was thinking full cage but didnt like the way they looked.

I am with you (Johnathan?), I don't think a full cage looks right on a open car.

Assuming some of the other comments were directed at my car:

Ride height - It is a bit high, a reworked exhaust (it is ground flat now from occational contact with the ground) and a skid plate will get it down for next year. However, most of my local Autocross sites have fairly rough pavement, so I can't get it as low as a track only car.

Small wheels - Race tire selection in the US for a lightweight car (Formula/Sport Racer type) pretty much dictates a 13" wheel size. Sedan/Production style race tires never get up to a good operating temperatue.

Im running 19x12 racing tires from an American Lemans series car. Should have enough grip and hopefully enough heat.

Due to front spindles my min wheel diameter is 14" but thats fine since the wheels are 19"

Yes that would be funnier.

W2R - how much does a set of those AMLS tires run, $2000? Even if you get the matching 600hp engine (which I remember you were considering), I would think it would be hard to get them up to temperature due to a lack of downforce. I would think that 12 - 14" wide Formula Atlantic tires would be as wild as you can get on a 7. Are you planning on running NASA Kit Car Challenge or SCCA Super Production?

Super production.

They are $800 a tire but I have some friends and possibly a sponsor.

It will reach temp. The AlMS car isnt very different to my car in terms of power an weight. The only thing it has over me is brakes.. We shall see how it all turns out.

Wow Pat - the lightweight has probably just been blown out of the window, but that looks like it should provide good protection (and probably some rigidity) so has to be worthwhile.

91ks as it is.

Could probably loose 10kg off the chassis if I adapted a few bits, but I'm happy with the extra bars in the tranny tunnel and the extra bracing here and there.
