Just been informed theres one of us out of 5 engineers that will have to go.

Bummer!!! Any word on how they intend to choose the short straw - last one in, first out etc?? Are they going to drag this out then?? Good luck

Was made redundant last year, real PITA, 3 months to find another job, which wasn't too bad, but 25% of my years income gone, still catching up
now

Sorry to hear that mate.
I've been made redundant three times in the last ten years
Try to keep positive - it might not be you, and even if it is, these things sometimes turn out to be a blessing in disguise. You might well go on to
find a much better job!
Or you could do what I did and work for yourself...always keeps you on the right side of the boss!!

Its the trend in engineering that at the first sign of panic they make loads of engineers redundant to protect the managers' jobs.

At GEC I was threatened with redundancy 5 times in 2 1/2 years. The final time I left on my own and went to another job where I was made redundant 9
months later.
I was lucky in that I got a good payoff and found a job quickly but it wasn't a happy time. I feel for you but look at it that you have an 80%
chance of keeping your job not a 20% chance of loosing it.

If that's their style of management - dropping bombshell and keeping you in suspense - I wouldn't want to work for them anyway.
They probably hope that one of you will jump and they won't have to pay redundancy.

Been there 8 years now and the last time there was redundancy I wasn't worried, this time we've lost two engineers who packed in and moved
on and we still have to get rid of another. This time I feel like it WILL be me, even though they are asking for volunteers first. Just cannot see any
of the other lads going for it.
Trouble is I'm quite happy and its only 10 mins from home

Stick in there then Steve. Might be a good idea to not even discuss it too much with the other 4 under threat - dont give any indication to them about
you might look to jump etc.

Just hang in there .... I was in a group of 1 and the group was impacted.
Just before D-day I was offered another position .... as they say It aint over till the FAT LADY SINGS.

get it circulated at all the local job agencies etc..
preparation is vital !!!!get a headstart
better to be on a front foot etc

coozer A few people i know that have been made redundant are in new jobs and doing better than they were before. I know it doesn't stop the
worry but just sometimes these things are meant to happen for a reason. Keep smiling

Sorry to hear your bad news Coozer...
Despite what advice has been currently written - dont subscribe to Agencies willy-nilly. Apply to one good that specialises in Engineering jobs...
most of the rest are just name harvesters.
That Agency would be Key Recruitment - speak to Libby Marshall tell her I gave you the name, she is brilliant.

monster on the web is very good
screaming for engineers up here in Aberdeen, huge shortage for most jobs, but house prices still very high though. Most engineers here can just pick
and choose what job they want, at my last place they couldn't hold onto them as virtually every one left for more money.
good luck but things will work out

Hope you get through it!
My parents went for years in fear of being made redundant from Vodafone, then they were made redundant and they've been much happier since. My
dad found a more enjoyable job, my mum spent the time doing things she hadn't had time for before.
Have a look around, see if there's anything else you'd like to do!

Sorry to hear that, and I'm afraid that Macbeast is probably right - no excuse for stringing it out like that unless they are hoping someone
jumps or want to pressure everyone into doing insane amounts of free overtime.
I suspect it's a subject we'll be seeing a lot more of over the next few months. I rather glad I moved out of management back to the code
face a year ago. We're just in the process of being bought and rumours abound of a junior/middle management bloodbath just before Christmas -
Senior management will likely get a big pile of cash to bugger off quietly on the day of the takeover.
Good luck either keeping your job or getting something better.

HI sorry to hear of your pending job loss
But i would not worry to much there's a healthy shortage of engineers around the world as all want to become lawyers doctors bankers star on x
factor ext.
I am engineer to and have been made redundant a few times goes with territory but never found it hard to find work as long as you adapt any how good
luck .

Very with you one this one, plenty of empathy.
Please, please, keep focused on the good things.
Two years ago, 200 down to 70. That went 6 months ago down to 30. The payroll couldn't be met last month, so it's not looking good.
Working within a desperate Company isn't a very good experience, your life is on hold. My house sale has stalled (obvious reasons), desperately
hoping it goes through, soon I'll be pretty much selling it for the cost of air tickets out of the UK.
Seriously though, I've been through severe depression last 3 years, now middle-age, spriral well. The only thing that keeps me going is the
weekend motorsport.
Hang on in there, if I'm the last worker to leave the UK, you'll know, the lights will probably have to be turned off. Don't know
where I'm going yet, but you may be following..!

Our company was 250, then wittled down to 180 then down to 80 and I was hit on the second wave due to the company being transferred to S.A. where they
thought it was cheaper. Paid me off and that paid the mortgage off, then bugger me after 4 months, they asked for me back....have been here now for 5
years and we are down to 10 and things are coming back to the UK.
My main point is they have to let you know what the requirement is for letting one of you go. It can depend on experiance (as in years) or a specific
talent that the company needs in the future. Could be last one in, first out....Don't get down, look at what jobs are being advertised (if
anything, don't go into banking or building houses!!!). Enjoy yourself if it does happen to you, I know I was for 4 months, not a care in the
world.
No doubt you will let us all know what happens.....Best foot forward man.....

My service is worth 10K but the other lads are all clamming to go so everyones arguing over who should get the cash!
Seems to be plenty of QA Engs required so may be time to just jack and go anyway.
