P*ssing matches / Arguments
Richard Quinn - 7/2/11 at 03:38 PM

I know it's been a long winter but is it just me that thinks that there is a bit too much bickering going on here at the moment. I appreciate that it is largely confined to a few threads but, now we have the bottom half of the page showing updated threads, it is becoming more apparent.
I understand that people will have differing points of view and I'm all for a bit of banter but I'm finding certain things more than a little tedious now. We might have different opinions but we have a common interest so can't we just all try a little harder at times please?
Thanks

I think any long running threads of an argumentative nature should be merged together - then we can find out things like whether inherent design flaws in the rear suspension on your MK Indy is a good excuse for knocking somone off their bike!

loggyboy - 7/2/11 at 05:10 PM

Sadly it comes with the turf. Be it genuine discussions that break down to arguments, or blatant slaggin matches. Its very easy to hide behind a keyboard and say things that you may hold back from or say in a less brash fashion when in person.

After 7 years of heavy forum use, ive learnt to live with it. Laugh when its funny, ignore when its not, but always say what you feel but try to keep to the truth and make sure you use the IMO, IIRC as get out clauses where you can!

Just one big melting pot thread. When a thread gets too argumentative, all posts get merged into the uberargument thread. It never gets listed on the front page and it makes it easier to for contributors to cross reference their difference of opinions

Triton - 7/2/11 at 05:19 PM

I thought this forum had become less of slanging match these days, if something needs saying it's best said though so here goes.

richardh - 7/2/11 at 06:43 PM

it's a pity more of the UK folk don't complain more! I mean in terms of trying to get more meaningful things back into the hands of the population and not in government, beurocrats, big business etc!

Fuel prices, all these cuts (why have to be so sharp and sudden) VAT rise, food price rises etc

Just tip of the iceberg here but attempting (badly ) to make a point.

I feel that people don't want face to face or to write letters, petitions etc but rather vent on forums where they feel they can let out their own frustrations.

Obviously some of these have been useful for us to see read and hear about but i agree with R Q above
All IMHO

mistergrumpy - 7/2/11 at 07:11 PM

It's just Winter. I've been on here since 2006 and every Winter there's slanging matches. Not as much since Calvin and Syd disappeared but I don't suppose that is a bad thing
It'll be back to business come the Summer months.

Ah... piddling contests!

I got a detention once for competing in one!

There were two types of contest at my primary school... the first involved how high you could wee up the wall, the other was how far back you could go and still land in the pan!

PS - The detention was for the second one. It was fair enough though as the floor was a bit wet due to there being a few competitors (one of whom was the headmasters son!).

Ah, fond days!

But I don't know that I don't like them until I read them. Usually they start off with a fairly unassuming question by the OP which then disappears off on a tangent and degenerates from there. I think that the earlier "melting pot" solution is actually pretty good as, irrespective of the intial question, the current trend is for it to end up in a bit of a "discussion" based on one of only a couple of themes.

So what's wrong with that. There's loads of threads here that I don't like, some I can tell just from the title, and don't even open them. Those I do open, and don't like, or start of all right and then take a turn I don't like, I stop reading. Can't see the problem myself.

I hate football, but don't complain if other people want to talk about it or argue about it.

I agree with your second post on this thread though (second one this week i might add). Just because one person doesnt like one thread, it doesnt mean that they expect everyone else to.

It wasn't the thread I didn't like, I made that clear at the time, it was the TITLE, which had nothing whatsoever to do with the thread.

Hope that clears that up for you.

MakeEverything - 8/2/11 at 06:16 PM

Not really, so I still don't see why you posted. Most of the titles don't reflect the content.

Best we leave that there, otherwise it'll turn into a pissing contest again, and you'll accuse me of attention seeking.

Happy to leave it there, as long as before that I can say that actually nearly all the titles DO reflect the content of the threads.

I can well understand why people are tempted to put something interesting in the title of their thread, to try to make it sound exciting or interesting, or mysterious even, it seems entirely reasonable to them at the time that they are doing it. But the problem is that if the title doesn't reflect the content (and I am sure you will admit that the one that I complained about didn't ) then we could end up in a situation where the threads didn't have any title at all, or one chosen at random, or even alphabetically, like they name hurricances etc, or where everybody competes with each other to post more and more obscure titles.

But that's threads I don't like. I ignore them. Usually I do that with 'teaser titles'. There's quite a few on this forum, and usually I ignore them. In a way you should be pleased that I decided open your "have we been barking up etc" thread because I guess that's what you wanted people to do. But the reason I opened it was that I thought it might be something serious or important, and when I found it wasn't I was annoyed at myself for breaking my own rule, and you for wasting my time. Maybe I could have been nicer about it... but then maybe you could have put something like V8 Sierra in the title, so I guess we are even on that.

The series of videos showed more than just a V8 sierra.

There were lots of people that commented on the videos within the thread, so i still don't see why you had to reply if you didnt like it. If you were annoyed at the waste of time, then you really need to find another pastime.

Anyway, i think its hilariously ironic that you say "Im happy to leave it there" then go on to leave five or six lines of pointless text, and also that you still choose to be argumentative in a thread named "Pi**ing Matches / Arguments".

You shall be known from here on in (By me anyway) as "Yeah But...".

Have a nice Evening.

There's not one negative or inflamatory post from me in that lot. In any case, to show that you are not a liar, you need to prove that "nearly every single post is a negative, inflammatory or offensive."

Best you STFU.

Censure (pronounced /ˈsɛnʃər/) is a process by which a formal reprimand is issued to an individual by an authoritative body(from wikipedia so it's 110% accurate).

I think you may have meant to type "moaned at"

p.s I know that the definition isn't accurate and that even if it was it couldn't be over 100% so.

No I really am that bored

Censure and censor, although quite different in meaning, are frequently confused. Both words can function as verbs and nouns, but censure means‘ express severe disapproval of’ (the country was censured for human rights abuses) or ‘the expression of severe disapproval’, while censor means‘ examine (a book, film, etc.) and suppress unacceptable parts of it’ (the letters she received were censored) or ‘an official who censors books, films, etc. (from oxford dictionary)

blakep82 - 8/2/11 at 09:28 PM

Davegtst - 8/2/11 at 10:29 PM

Why is it 'Just not done'? Whats special about them?

Fozzie - 8/2/11 at 10:31 PM

The other thread got closed because......

It had got so far off topic it was of no use to the OP (a relative newbie), and
a few had decided to use the newbies post to pursue their own agendas.......

I was fed up with loads of 'report' u2u's.........

Yep they get closed by 'Fozzie' because......Fozzie is Admin......

This one will be going the same way......I will point out yet again....that 'Flaming'
is not allowed on this forum......please bear in mind.....

Some really need to relax and meditate.....Spring will be here soon...and you will all feel more cheery... and stop feeling bored....

Life is too short.......

Fozzie

The thread is still there........http://www.locostbuilders.co.uk/forum/21/viewthread.php?tid=149086

Joel.....what exactly are you saying here? .... Threads are very, very rarely deleted by either ChrisW or myself..we just usually close the thread, and only when it has gone so far off the original topic it is of no use to man or beast!
Which is, as you know very different from deleting it.

..It is more often than not the OP who deletes their own threads.....usually when the original question has never been answered, just an OT slanging match ruining it.........

Hence after a certain time people cannot edit their posts......nor delete their own threads ....

If people actually stayed 'On Topic' ... there wouldn't be a problem........

Fozzie

This has become far too polite. Does anyone know anything about GTS?

Sorry.

Grrr, down with Fozzie, Fozzie is bad, she administers with a rod of iron. Lets protest, down with Fozzie. She interferer's with everything. grrr.... Save locostbuilders, overthrow the draconian overlords......

Folks, does anyone feel that we have overbearing administration on this site? Its done very gently and self moderates very well. Fozzies intervention is (i think) very infrequent and expertly judged. I would have personally liked the MK thread to have continued till an answer was given as its a semi regular thread & an answer would hopefully have given closure and stop it restarting. Although i do appreciate i'm an idealist at times with very few axes to grind and completely understand and support why it was closed.

ps already reported myself to Fozzie for a severe punishment & yes i've found it ironic reading this thread

To answer

NO

I agree

So would I after so much bikering a most definative answer would have a fitting end to the thread.

Nothing wrong with being an idealist I also ( having a scratch build ) have no axe to grind BUT I do like closure and definative ends to questions and problems.

I do understand why it was closed ( to much slagging )but feel we were cheated for an end to the question.

Sometimes being a realist and an idealist does not get any answers.

Fozzie has a hard job to do sometimes and very very rarely has to intervene. I Hope she doesn't feel to bad when she does have to. IF it all becomes to much for her then we might need to give her a big bosey ( cmon fozzie i reckon you know what that is)

Fozzie - 9/2/11 at 11:52 PM

Mike and Omega ...

Thanks for the encouragement...and yes, it is very much like being 'between a rock and a hard place.'

I also very much understand the desire for an answer to the questions (albeit off-topic) raised.......

But............the Post Originator a relative 'newbie' had his thread Hijacked which was not fair on him.....

It would have been better and probably more constructive to have started a new thread.

Debate is a good thing, especially with such expertise as we have on this forum...but again
when some resort to personal bickering (which is not on) it can and does put a lot of peeps off
and stops some knowledgeable peeps from joining in with their knowledge.
And then the debate becomes forgotten and more 'bickering' ensues......

Kudos is then lost.....

I think someone started another Roll Cage thread anyway......I haven't looked at the site in depth today
as I have just come out of hospital (a couple of hours ago).....I feel really sore, tired and got loads of stitches..(had surgery this morning) .....

I will catch up with it tomorrow....

Fozzie....

Mike...no 'punishment' needed
Omega ...yep a big bosey would be welcome...but only because I am feeling sooooo 'ouchy' sore ...

I get the feeling that a forum like this attracts a specific kind of person, namely one who can think for themselves/theirselves. This means that two people will have very different opinions on something and even scientific basis/proof/experience to back them both up.

Luckily Fozzie's "rod of iron" doesn't have to get swung much

Oh and:
I feel this thread is pointless, please close it

Grrr, flipping easter eggs out in January, wtf? As soon as one "holiday" is over they're ramming the next one down us!

Although as far as I'm concerned they can sell creme eggs all year round
